LEITAT

LEITAT is a non-profit organization, specialized in production technologies. LEITAT develops R&D activities in the areas of material sciences, nanosafety, additive manufacturing, biomedicine, and biotechnologies with deep knowledge and experience in technological transfers to several industrial sectors. Furthermore, LEITAT provides a full range of services the different industrial sectors from material design, testing and processing, to the development of prototypes. In particular, the several testing departments at LEITAT offer services for the determination of more than 800 physical and chemical parameters (including ISO Certification and Normalization). LEITAT Technological Center is one of the leading European research centers actively involved in NanoSafety, with a total staff of 25 in the Safety and Sustainability department. This department at Leitat is a multidisciplinary group that gathers extensive expertise and technical capacities in the area of nanomaterial safety. Organic and analytical chemists, material scientists, engineers, biologists, toxicologists, and environmental scientists work together and foster the synergies needed for tackling the challenges on the safety assessment of nanotechnologies and the development of safe-by-design approaches. The group is internationally renowned by its work on the assessment of nanomaterial release from products containing nanomaterials during different stages of their life cycle, as well as (eco)toxicological risk assessment and life cycle assessment. Current nanosafety activities are funded by the European Commission (involving a e number of projects under the FP7 framework and Horizon 2020) and National projects and also several contracts with the industry. Relevant for caLIBRAte LEITAT is currently coordinating one of the latest large FP7 nanosafety project, GUIDEnano, which includes 30 partners with the aim to develop a web-based guidance Tool to support industry in the assessment and mitigation of human health and environmental risks of nanotechnology.

In caLIBRAte LEITAT will lead WP6 and will also participate in technical WP4, WP7, besides the dissemination WP9 and management WP10. Our main role in the project is to establish a state-of-the-art suite of value-chain case-studies and generate case-studies with data in all Risk Governance aspects for further demonstration in the risk governance framework developed in the project.
